Saint Parfum says they maintain the largest in-house fragrance note palate of any home-fragrance brand in the world and offer 101 home fragrances as well as custom blends. Custom blends cost a $175 one time fee plus the cost of products which include candles and reed diffusers. You can select for your recipient or go the gift certificate route.
Saint Parfum Custom Blend Home Fragrance originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 28 Nov 2008 12:02:00 EST. He talks about how the nose gets accustomed to certain scents and basically stops smelling them (which explains how people can work in some pretty smelly places and not go completely nuts). All the more reason then to sample the endless amount of perfumes in the world. The International Herald Tribune recently had an interesting piece on bespoke fragrance in Paris. Bespoke fragrances have a variety of price points but to get the attention of a classically-trained nose you will have to pay couture prices. At the top of the line we find Cartier. At Cartier in Paris, Mathilde Laurent is the in-house "nose" creating "made-to-measure" scents. For custom designs Cartier sells a set of two Baccarat flasks of five fluid ounces, three small spray bottles and two refill bottles, enough for three to five years for $75,500.

Small perfume company, l'Artisan Parfumeur is planning to introduce in January a line of single-edition perfumes. Only one bottle of each will be made and sold through the Paris store. Bertrand Duchaufour is the nose behind the Mon Numéro line which will be sold in one-off bottles designed by Pascale Riberolles, an artist and master glass blower and sell for about $20,000.

But the person in the article I'd most like to sniff out just might be Francis Kurkdjian, who doesn't work out of a boutique but has a website and a mobile laboratory which he travels around the world with to meet clients. He has worked on fragrances for Kenzo, Armani, Yves St. Laurent and others and has the type of obsessively passionate devotion to scent that is a hallmark of the best noses. Kurkdjian's bespoke scents are conceived, blended and matured over 6 to 10 months, and priced at $10,000 for two 60-milliliter flasks which are hand-engraved with a name or personal message.
The Bespoke Perfumes of Paris originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 22 Nov 2008 14:02:00 EST. Revelations has sued Prince and Universal Music Publishing Group for $100,000, claiming he and his record company failed to help peddle the scent.

The suit was filed earlier this week in New York State Supreme Court. Revelations licensed Prince's name and likeness to create 3121 and another fragrance due out in 2009. According to court documents, Revelations put out more than $2.5 million for said privilege and promised to give Universal a 50 percent cut of the proceeds, and in return Prince was supposed to be available for marketing purposes.

"Since July 2007, despite repeated attempts by Revelations there have been virtually no communications from anyone who could commit to or coordinate any promotional efforts by Prince," the suit states.

Responding to the suit, which its legal team had not yet seen, Universal issued a statement calling the plaintiff's claims "completely without merit."

While nowhere near the amount of this suit, it's never a good time to (possibly) be out $100K. Asked what makes the cologne smell good, Sirico said they put some "cognac in it -- and it made the magic." There also are plans for Paulie-branded deodorant, aftershave, and other hygiene products. Over the last few years it has seemed that the gifts with purchase have been less and less enticing but perhaps now, with the scramble on for every last dollar, cosmetics companies know we need a little enticement. Clinique has partnered with Trina Turk on a special makeup bag and free gift available with any $25 purchase at Nordstrom until November 22 (the website has a list of Trina Turk's favorite Clinique products and a video on her design inspirations). The gift includes a 1.7 ounce foaming cleanser, .5 ounce Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift Firming cream, a compact with eyeshadow and powder blusher, a small mascara, a lip gloss, a lipstick and silvery lipstick case inside the silver and white Trina Turk cosmetics travel bag. Karen at the Makeup and Beauty Blog recently tested it out and found it a winner even if the pink, plum and coral shades are a bit summery.
Clinique and Trina Turk Gift With Purchase originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 15:02:00 EST. The last few years have seen Ford takes his heavily sexed-up style into a line of dramatic fragrances advertised with semi-nude photos and the promise of easy seduction. But perhaps Ford is calming down (indeed, a recent Sunday Times profile reveals an almost avuncular side of the famous egoist). His website, which used to launch with a rapid fire barrage of sexualized imagery, now has a restrained display of his menswear line.

And then there's his latest fragrance, White Patchouli. The name doesn't exactly inspire confidence (when you get right down to it Black Orchid sounds a lot more intriguing than White Patchouli which brings to mind batik prints and sticky bottles of essential oils). But the scent is really intriguing. A soft woodsy floral that balances the patchouli against white flowers, rose absolute and ambrette seed, it manages to gives the exotic intrigue of patchouli without the musty heaviness that has given it such a bad name. The most surprising thing of all is its subtlety. Unlike some of Ford other scents a woman doesn't feel like she needs to put on stilettos and a push-up bra. Restraint from Tom Ford? What is this world coming to? The 1.7 ounce Eau de Parfum sells for $92.
White Patchouli, The Softer Side Of Tom Ford originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 15:02:00 EST. Recently Ralph Lauren's Limited-Edition Love Eau de Parfum Amethyst hit the market, selling for $2,200 at Neiman Marcus and boasting a 47 carat amethyst as a bottle topper. Now here comes Donatella Versace with her four-figure offering, Gianni Versace Couture, a new fragrance that will retail for $2,100. The new fragrance comes in a white leather train case and has notes of bergamot and tangerine with a floral kick from jasmine, heliotrope and almond blossom and a base that includes tonka bean, patchouli heart and sandalwood. The scent will be sold in Versace's boutiques, launching in November in Europe and not hitting the U.S. until December. There will be 100 pieces made to start out with but more will be made if wallets remain flush through the new year.
Versace's Pricey New Perfume originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 25 Oct 2008 19:02:00 EST. Their products not only smell beautiful, but they look beautiful as well, and truly enrich the splendor of any well-decorated room. We covered them last March when they began carrying the Michael S Smith collection, which quickly became a major name in home fragrance.

Newly included in the prestigious Bergdorf Goodman's Home Decor Catalogue, the Villa Potpourri Boxes above have a gentle rustic look and scent. The potpourri box is a perfect way to release fragrance into a room while protecting it from dust bunnies. You can also purchase the Villa Potpourri Boxes here on the Agraria website for $150 to $325. Love someone with a musty-smelling home? British design team Boudicca challenges that assertion with Wode, fragrance that comes in a spray paint-like container and goes on cobalt blue but then fully disappears in a few moments. It's a startling effect. The scent itself has notes of juniper berry, hemlock, tonka bean and tuberose absolute and is also available in a version without the color change. It sells for £65 in "paint" form and is only available in the UK currently.

For more information on how the scent came to be, check out the JC Report interview with Boudicca's Zowie Broach.
Wode, Fragrance Gets Visible originally appeared on Luxist on Fri, 17 Oct 2008 10:02:00 EST. When I opened the padded mailer sent to me by Neil Morris Fragrances, I knew I was going to love his scents. There was none of that chemical tang associated with some scents, just a subtle whiff of light flowers, the sort of olfactory tease that you might catch walking down a street on a warm spring day, an amuse bouche for the nose. Morris, who is based in Boston, has been designing for fragrances for private retail for 30 years. Most recently he designed the signature fragrance for Takashimaya New York, the first U.S. location of the Japanese department store. He has a passion for fragrances, creating scents that capture a mood or a moment in single spray. Want the smell of a cafe in Paris, the cool interior of a cathedral redolent with incense, or the scent of a crisp fall day in New England? You may want to visit the The Vault, a collection of rare Neil Morris fragrances that are only available online and sell for $125 a bottle. Morris also believes that florals are not the exclusive province of women, in The Vault you can find scents from his "Flowers for Men" series that includes lilac and gardenia scents that are beefed up with notes of citrus and wood.

He also creates bespoke fragrances, meeting one on one with a client to discover what he call their "scent heritage." He asks clients about their most cherished memories, such as, "What is their favorite time of day?" "If you could snap your fingers and be anywhere in the world right now, where would that be?" or "Where did their fiancé propose?" The details help him create a unique scent from his collection of more than 700 essential oils. He maintains a record of all his custom scents so clients may re-order with ease or even tweak the original scent. A one-on-one session starts at $500 and lasts about 90 minutes. Clients receive a two-ounce bottle of their bespoke parfum customized with their name on it.

Today for you, I have a two-ounce bottle of Zephyr from the Neil Morris Fragrance Signature Collection for giveaway. The scent was inspired by the relief of a cooling breeze on a hot August day and has top notes of tangerine and papaya, a heart of honeysuckle and Casablanca lily, notes of white tea, and a base of sandalwood, amber and oceanic musk. It's a little fruity but not in that overly faux playful way that some more commercial scents can be. It is supposed to be unisex but it may be a bit on the floral side for some men. Which brings me to today's giveaway comment starter: are there some scents men should not wear? Are florals for women only? How about unisex fragrances? Case in point: Hot couple David and Victoria Beckham have teamed up for another commercial venture. On September 26, the duo launched their new Beckham Signature Fragrance Collection at Macy's Herald Square in New York City. Let's hope it doesn't go the way of her clothing collection.

Anyway ... about 2,000 fans showed up in the rain to see the dynamic duo release their fragrances -- Signature for Her and Signature for Him. "It's great for me to be able to create a fragrance for him, but he is much more involved than he gives himself credit for," gushed Victoria. "David has such amazing taste!"

"The new venture reportedly represents a foray into more prestige branding and is meant to reflect their new image since their establishment in California," mimifroufrou.com reported. "It is not entirely clear what this means, but it seems to be an allusion to a more ostentatious, glamorous Californian lifestyle and maybe something to do with the myth of the American dream."

Signature for Her, a fruity floriental, was developed by Beckham with Sylvie Fischer from Takasago. It opens with anise flower and candy apple; has a heart of orchid, heliotrope, and vanilla; and a drydown of patchouli, amber, and musk. "I love white orchids, and I wanted something light," said Beckham. "I can't bear it when you can smell someone before you see them."

Signature for Him, a fresh woody oriental concocted by Beckham and Beatrice Piquet of International Flavors & Fragrances, opens with mandarin, watermelon, and marine notes; has a heart of fresh living lantana, cypress, and spicy juniper berry, and a drydown of moss, sensual white amber and patchouli.

The Eaux de Toilette will retail for $52 and $62 for her, and $50 and $60 for him.

Of note: Most of the comments I saw on this news focused on what the two were wearing (David: Tom Ford suit, Victoria: Antonio Berardi outfit and heel-less boots).
Posh 'n' Becks Launch New Fragrance Collection originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 14:02:00 EST.
