Now, for two days only Gabriella Risatti, owner of Gabriella New York bridal salon in the Meatpacking District of New York City is making reproductions of the dress for $15,000 tomorrow and Thursday only. The $3,510 raw silk dress with hand-embroidered rosettes is part of a line of elegant evening gowns and ladylike dresses selling in the $1,000 to $6,000 range. The dress features hand-embroidered florets with French knots that took 100 hours of labor in a New York studio. Wu told the Wall Street Journal's Heard on the Runway that Mrs. Obama paid for the dress. It bears noting that Wu's fashionable and feminine Spring 2009 line features more than a couple of ball gowns which could be perfect for an Inauguration gala but apparently Wu isn't focusing on that, telling the WSJ that it's "a long shot."

%Gallery-36644%
Michelle Obama Wears Jason Wu originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 18:01:00 EST. A retrospective of his graffiti prints and neon aesthetic called "Rock on Mars" will be shown at Deitch Projects' 18 Wooster Street gallery in New York City from Jan. 8 to Feb. 28 and a new book "The Stephen Sprouse Book," by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha is due out from Rizzoli New York at the start of 2009. WWD reveals that Marc Jacobs, who collaborated with Sprouse on a line for Louis Vuitton in 2001 (Sprouse died in 2004), is creating a new, limited edition collection of accessories and ready-to-wear. And once again, Jacobs took the chance to show off his gym-fit body, posing only with only a bag covering his nether region and Sprouse-style graffiti adorning his skin in a shoot for Harper's Bazaar shot by Terry Richardson.

Jacobs has taken two Sprouse motifs the graffiti lettering and the rose and put them over the classic Vuitton Monogram print on Vuitton's Keepall, Speedy and Neverfull bag styles as well as sneakers shoes and other accessories. The clothing includes a mackintosh raincoat with a graffiti and monogram lining, eggings and a long-sleeve neon minidress. Vuitton will also launch a website, welovesprouse.com later this month which will include interviews with people who knew Sprouse.
Vuitton Celebrates Stephen Sprouse originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 17:02:00 EST. The hoodie was shown off at the American Music Awards by singer Colby O'Donis. It's not all just senseless display Konqest says the hoodie was designed to draw attention to the new line and raise funds for building schools in Uganda and that 30% of the profit will be donated to charity. The hoodie will go on display at several stores in Los Angeles which carry the line. Or am I just out of touch with legwear world? Here's what got me wondering: The onslaught of holidays catalogs has begun, and although I use a junk-mail removal service, one slipped through, addressed to my home's former owner. It was from Bare Necessities, seller of lingerie, hosiery, sleepwear, loungewear and accessories, as well as a few men's items. I was taken aback when I saw several pantyhose items for $30 and upward, up to as high as $340 for wool leggings. Considering I write for Luxist, you would think I would not be surprised to see the word "luxury" batted around even such a basic wardrobe item as pantyhose. But I was. And then, just two days later, while in a moderately upscale department store, I noticed that Cole-Haan now makes "luxury" microfiber tights for about $30 (not sold online). Sarah Jessica Parker recently was spotted wearing a $250 pair of Chanel pantyhose. So, I guess I really am out of touch and that legwear can indeed be luxurious, and expensive, but can be an affordable splurge. Check the gallery for some of the pricier hosiery items offered by Bare Necessities, all from Wolford.

%Gallery-37764%
Can Hosiery Be Luxurious? originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 18:01:00 EST. "This is a family company. We need to think about the future and ways to develop the brand," Brioni CEO Antonella De Simone tells WWD.

The company, founded in Rome in 1945 and named after a resort on the Adriatic Sea, makes ready-to-wear and bespoke men's suits costing from $6,000 - $36,000, and has a women's line as well. Really. If there's something you want to carry in a Louis Vuitton case, they will probably make one for you.

The only criteria-strictly enforced to honor the original spirit of the 150-year-old company-are that the item is portable and that its raison d'être is transport. "We are in the business of movement," says Patrick-Louis Vuitton, a fifth-generation member of the founding family who oversees all of LV's custom projects. "A special order is a compromise between desires and needs from the client and our aesthetic and technical requirements." - Men's Vogue

Louis Vuitton makes about 450 special-order cases every year at their Asnières, France workshop. The process of creating a perfect case for a client's needs can take four to five months, but their policy is to never exceed eight.

Over the years, cases have been created for everything from hookah pipes to a portable altar for a French priest heading to a desert archaeological dig in the 1920's.

Louis Vuitton won't make just anything, though. If they don't like your request (say, to put little LV's all over the interior of your car, a move similar to the one that ended up with Britney Spears on the losing end of a Vuitton lawsuit), they'll modify the idea and make a suggestion - their polite version of refusal.

[via Men's Vogue]
How A Louis Vuitton Case Is Made originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 16 Nov 2008 16:02:00 EST. I was showing fine jewelry and she had these gorgeous silk scarves... I basically spent all the money I made that day selling jewelry at Ms. Polin's booth. I should have known better than to actually visit her store, where I'd find more than small accessories -- whole outfits of the most beautiful marbled silk material I'd ever seen. Goodbye, paycheck.

I may have parted with more than I could afford at the time, but it was money well spent. Years later, everything I bought from Ms. Polin's studio, SoLace, is still holding up marvelously. The silk that she uses is extremely lightweight, but also very strong and sturdy, so these clothes are really an investment.

Most of her designs are made from a marbled fabric, which she dyes herself in her studio, making every piece one of a kind. She also marbles leather for accessories like wallets, photo albums, and various types of cases. Clothing styles are available for both men and women, and Ms. Polin has been known to take custom orders. You can browse and buy on the SoLace website, or catch her at a craft fair or in her studio in Elkton, Virginia, where you'll find an even better selection than what you see on her website.
SoLace Marbled Silk & Accessories originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 16 Nov 2008 12:03:00 EST. When Milano, an avid baseball fan, went to games, "she wanted to wear fan gear to support her team, but found that the product mix offered in the marketplace did not address her everyday fashion needs. She felt women should be able to look stylish while cheering on their favorite team. So, she partnered with G-III Apparel Group and Major League Baseball to design and distribute a line of juniors' ladies MLB apparel." And so it began.

I just learned about the line when I saw a TV ad during a Sunday night football game; it seems the NFL partnership is fairly new. This line includes 245 products that range in price from $16.99 - $89.99.

View the gallery for some examples. Most of the products are available for multiple teams.

%Gallery-36590%
Alyssa Milano Designs for NFL Fans originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 14:02:00 EST. There's no need to travel all the way to London however to indulge in custom-tailoring of the highest quality and style that transcends trends and fads, if you know where to look. In New York City, David Chu, founder of the Nautica brand who has since gone on to revitalize luggage maker Tumi, operates an ultra-chic Bespoke shop at his gorgeous Townhouse in Gramercy Park.

The Bespoke shop (above) is located in the penthouse of the Townhouse, which is home to Chu's design studio and other businesses. Ebonized and limestone floors, marble fixtures and a collection of contemporary artwork and Chinese antiquities create an elegant, polished and modern atmosphere. French doors open out from the shop onto a landscaped roof deck with captivating city and park views. "The bespoke experience is about understated elegance," Chu tells Luxist. "It's more for yourself. You put it on, it feels great, and that's the most important thing."

David Chu Bespoke "blends the best of Savile Row and Neapolitan tailoring, marrying craftsmanship with modernity." Garments are hand-cut and stitched by a master tailor based in Naples. A gentleman can order anything he requires to be custom made, from suits, overcoats, tuxedos, and sport jackets to trousers, shoes, scarves, and 12-fold ties. The emphasis is on classic, luxurious fabrics such as super 150's wool, worsted spun cashmere and vicuna sourced from the world's best mills.

%Gallery-36449%

Continue reading The Classicist: Bespoke by David Chu

The Classicist: Bespoke by David Chu originally appeared on Luxist on Mon, 10 Nov 2008 09:02:00 EST. The Danish siren stars as a sexy pirate in Agent Provocateur's latest ad campaign (above), the story line of which involves her seducing the captain of a ship she's attempting to plunder. The Pirate-inspired lingerie also features in a video clip containing cryptic clues, along with pix of AP's other new line, Witches. As we reported in August, Agent Provocateur has big plans for expansion.
